Perks and Programs

We asked California Charter Schools Association to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Generous Working Parents Pay: CCSA provides 4 weeks of full pay during maternity leave and 2 weeks of full pay during paternity leave. Pay can be used during any portion of an employee's related leave.
  • Generous PTO and 401K match: CCSA's Paid Time Off (PTO) and 401K match is very generous for a non-profit. From 0-2 years employment, full-time employees receive three weeks of PTO; after 2 years they receive four weeks of PTO; after 3 years they receive five weeks of PTO; after 5 years they receive 6 weeks of PTO. In addition, CCSA matches 100% of an employee's 401K contribution up to 6% of her/his salary.
  • Professional Development Allowance: Employees at CCSA receive a professional development allowance to spend on professional development related to their job function and interests. Staff have used the money to attend trainings on management, public speaking, as well as to attend conferences such as the National Charter School Conference and Salesforce's Dreamforce conference.
  • Regional Social Funds: At CCSA, each region receives $125/staff member to sponsor social activities for our staff to get to know each other on a personal level. Each region then has a social committee that decides how to spend the social funds. Past social activities include renting a box suite at the Oakland A's game, cooking classes, in-office massages, holiday parties, and bowling events.
  • Generous Technology: On their first day, CCSA's full-time permanent employees receive a laptop and iPhone.  If new hires would like, they can port their existing cell numbers in as well.
  • Staff Retreats: Twice a year, CCSA hosts staff retreats, where we visit a different location in California to connect in-person and build foundational knowledge about our organization. The fall retreat is a Thanksgiving theme where we spend time thanking staff for their hard work.
  • Welcoming New Hire Orientation: Our New Hire Orientation is focused on helping new hires not only feel welcome, but ramp up quickly to their new job. Thus, we fly new hires to Los Angeles for their first two days, where we give them an overview of the organization and training on our technology tools. Then, within the new hire's first three months, new hires are flown to Sacramento for a tour of the state capitol and to meet with our most senior leaders, including our CEO.  Finally, they meet with a senior leader from each of our teams to learn about how they can collaborate with that team.
  • Commuter and Retailer Perks: Through programs offered by our third-party HR provider, staff can use pre-tax dollars to pay for parking fees and public transit passes. Additionally, they can access employee discounts, member benefits, corporate perks, student discounts and coupons at top national retailers.
