20 Best Workplaces in Health Care

By virtue of their industry, most health care organizations offer their employees a built-in opportunity to do meaningful work and be proud of their impact on their community. But is working in health care only about altruism? What do the best organizations in the industry offer their own employees?

To find out, my colleagues and I surveyed nearly 30,000 health care workers to determine the 20 Best Workplaces in Health Care. Taking the top spot is Texas Health Resources, a faith-based not-for-profit health care organization with almost 21,000 employees operating 24 hospitals and outpatient facilities throughout Texas.

“The leadership cares - genuinely cares - about the employees,” says one Texas Health Resources team member. “I see it every day and I tell my family about it because I've just never been in a place like this before. I feel like they're rooting for me to succeed.”

Employees’ top picks reflect a broad range of organization sizes and services areas within the health care industry. In the number two slot is Springfield Nephrology Associates, a medical group in Springfield, Missouri with just 27 people who provide inpatient and outpatient medical care to patients with kidney disease. ZocDoc, another winner, isn’t a direct care provider, but instead provides a free service that allows patients to find nearby medical care from providers who accept their insurance.

Winning companies offer a range of perks, including flexible scheduling, onsite fitness classes, 100 percent company-paid health coverage for employees and their dependents, and unlimited vacation.

Taking into account the full range of health care organizations we analyzed, we found that if employees are looking for a workplace that gives them the opportunity to do meaningful work among friendly people and have a positive impact on the community, they won’t have to search too hard to find it. Among health care employers who are trying to create attractive workplaces for employees, these specific qualities are pretty much a given.

However, the 20 Best Workplaces in Health Care are miles apart from their peers on three measures assessing their generosity, fairness and managerial approach, providing workplaces that employees report are an outstanding 20 to 27 percent better than their peers.

Employees who choose to work at one of the 20 Best Workplaces in Health Care are 27 percent more likely to earn a fair share of their company’s overall profits and 20 percent more likely to receive special and unique benefits. They are also less likely to suffer through a “command and control” environment: 24 percent more employees at the best workplaces report that their managers involve them in decisions.
