Perks and Programs

We asked Blick Art Materials to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Bonus Incentive Programs: Blick’s incentive programs are tailored to its unique workforce. Hourly associates who work in our distribution centers are provided incentives based on productivity and quality control, and are paid out every 8 weeks. In our retail stores the incentive program is based on customer satisfaction, sales, and shrink (loss of inventory due to errors, waste, theft, etc.) and is paid out every four weeks. In our home office locations, individual incentive targets are customized by department and by individual in order to encourage creative thinking, collaboration, and productivity. These incentives are paid on an annual basis and range from 5–15% of base pay.
  • Associate Wellness Program: Blick believes in supporting the health and wellness goals of its associates. This support includes health club or YMCA memberships, yoga classes, kick-boxing classes, nutrition and weight loss management programs, and smoking cessation programs. The company also provides free annual health screenings for all full-time associates. These voluntary screenings include biometric tests, blood pressure tests, and other information that can be shared with the associate's primary care physician if requested.
  • Product Discount Program: Blick offers every associate a discount of up to 40% off the ELP (Everyday Low Price) for its Blick and Utrecht brand products, and up to 30% off ELP on most other products.
  • Associate Luncheons: At Blick’s facilities in Galesburg, Illinois, and Monroe Township, New Jersey, associates on every shift are treated to several catered meals throughout the year, served during working hours.
  • Associate Appreciation Program: Blick sponsors various associate appreciation events throughout the year that include picnics and BBQs, outdoor concerts, shopping excursions, golf outings, casino and dinner theater outings, and others, depending on the associate’s work location. Some of these events also include invitations extended to significant others and children/grandchildren.
  • Profit-Sharing Program and 401(k) Plan Match: Blick associates share in the company’s success by receiving a yearly profit-sharing contribution. Associates are 100% vested in the plan once they meet the eligibility requirements. Participation in the company’s 401(k) plan is voluntary for associates who are at least 18 years old and have completed 60 days of employment. Blick matches 100% of the first 3% of an associate’s 401(k) contribution, and 50% of the next 2% contribution, for a maximum 4% company match.
  • Transportation Benefit/Stipend: For associates at our Highland Park, Illinois, home office location, paid parking is provided, or an equivalent dollar amount for transportation to work via public transportation (Metra or CTA). Blick associates who travel on company business are allowed to earn and retain the miles, points, and other benefits earned from frequent traveler programs.
  • Annual Holiday Celebrations and Other Recognition: Associates at Blick’s home offices and distribution centers are invited to an annual holiday party. Those who have achieved milestone service anniversaries are recognized at these events and receive a gift from the company. Depending on location, significant others and children/grandchildren are also invited to attend. Every retail associate receives a gift from the company at year-end.
  • Associate Recognition Program: Blick has implemented an online recognition program that offers all associates the ability to recognize others and be rewarded for above-and-beyond performance. Perks include points to exchange for gifts cards, products, charity donations, and other unique items.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Blick is always interested in interviewing talented people who want to work for a great company. Some of the things that capture our attention most are valuable work experience, doing well in school, and having a creative flair that can be demonstrated. Those interested in joining our team can send a resume and a cover letter that includes career objectives and interests to recruiting@dickblick.com. Blick always keeps resumes on file, so even if we're not hiring at the current time, interested candidates should contact us — we may pull up resumes if we have a future opening in a particular area of expertise or career interest. Cover letters should include how and why candidates have made a positive difference in their community, college, university, and/or previous employment, and how they hope to draw on those positive experiences to make a difference at Blick.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

Blick Art Materials is always interested in meeting new, interesting, and talented people. Our dozens of retail stores across the country experience higher turnover when our part-time student associates graduate and move on, so we hire for those positions throughout the year. Our distribution center in Monroe Township, New Jersey, continues to expand, and we continue to hire new associates at that facility. Last but not least, we’re always adding to our Information Technology and Information Systems teams as the company continues to grow.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Interested candidates should visit DickBlick.com, click on the “Careers” tab, and search the posted positions. If there is a position that is of interest or matches the candidate’s skillset, complete the online application found there. Candidates can also contact us at recruiting@dickblick.com.
