We asked Blach Construction Company to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Employee Shareholders: The company has invited 66 employees to purchase shares in the company, thus becoming part owners. These employees receive company financials every quarter, and attend an annual Shareholders Meeting or Retreat. Of the 66 invited employees, more than 50 have already become shareholders. This is unusual for a privately held construction company, and an incredibly special reward for outstanding employees.
  • Infertility/Adoption Assistance: Blach Construction supports employees that require medical intervention for fertility issues with a confidential matching contribution up to $10,000. In addition, we provide up to $10,000 in matching funds for employees choosing to adopt a child. These programs are part of our family-friendly culture and symbolize one of our core values, commitment to employees.
  • Mentoring Program: All employees are eligible for a mentor within the company, and we encourage employees to step outside the program and approach mentors on their own, either for one-off advice or to establish an informal mentoring relationship with someone they respect at the company. The company has provided training and many other resources to employees on both how to be a mentor and how to drive the process as a mentee.
  • Blach University: Although employee development occurs in a number of simultaneous ways at Blach, our formal training program is offered through Blach University. Each year we offer a variety of training classes including those in the technical, safety, industry, leadership, and business arenas, as well as classes on the “soft” skills. Many of these classes are led by our employees who are “internal experts” on the topic at hand, which provides dual training and leadership opportunities for employees to perfect their teaching and presentation skills.
  • Paid Community Service: While we do not have a formal paid time off for community service program, many Blach employees use work time to volunteer in the community. This can take many forms such as working on non-profit Boards of Directors, giving presentations about construction as a career at school sites and in our offices, and providing interview skills training to disadvantaged youth at non-profits set up for their support. The company will also match employee donations for nonprofit organizations in which employees serve on the Board of Directors.
  • Advanced Degree Program: In some cases, the company pays 80% of the tuition for a job-related MBA or Master's degree program for employees.
  • Outside Events: Blach Construction participates in suites at local sports, entertainment, and concert venues. Employees are invited to events that match their preferences, often with clients and other business partners. We also enter a significant number of charity golf tournaments in the local community and employees are encouraged to attend. We even set up golf lessons for interested female employees that wanted to improve their golf game so that our CEO and COO would have more diversity in their choice of foursomes.
  • Company Entertainment Center: The company built an outstanding outdoor entertainment center on our back patio (see photo attached). Employees use this space for lunch and breaks, and it includes a putting green, bocce court, conversation fire pit, corn hole, and an amazing built-in barbecue for employees’ use. Accompanying the outdoor entertainment center is a big screen television and a bar, equipped with pre-paid cab vouchers for any employee to use, no questions asked, whenever they need a safe ride home. In addition, we offer this space, at no cost, to local non-profits.
  • Company Events: Blach Construction Company hosts several annual employee events. These include our ‘Employee Appreciation Bocce Tournament’, Veterans’ Night to honor long-serving employees, Founder’s Day to honor the founder of our company, Rookies’ Night at our CEO’s home to welcome all new employees, and our Holiday party in December. We also host numerous impromptu events to celebrate promotions, company successes, and new parents.
  • Extra Benefits and Amenities: We offer a fully equipped gym in our office (as well as health club reimbursements for employees’ own gyms), a fully stocked kitchen with food for breakfast, lunch, and all-day, healthy snacks and a beautifully equipped Nursing Room for new mothers. What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

When we interview prospective new employees, we specifically look for employees that embody the characteristics listed in our Blach Construction Success Criteria.  These are qualities that encompass a successful Blach employee, listed under the four larger categories of I.Q. (intelligence quotient), E.Q. (emotional intelligence quotient), technical skills, and drive. 

A few examples of characteristics listed under the Blach Success Criteria are: excellent interpersonal skills, exhibits strong leadership qualities, outstanding technical skills, values match with those of the company, highly intelligent, great team player, passion for construction, exhibits strong initiative, and gives colleagues the benefit of the doubt.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

One of the most important things we are looking for in prospective employees is a genuine passion for construction and a clear interest in working for Blach, specifically.  We appreciate when candidates have done thorough research on the company and truly understand what we do. 

Also, prospective employees can catch our interest by having a positive attitude and being open and flexible, even throughout the interview process.  We look for candidates whose values match those of the company and whom we can see as fitting in seamlessly with our people and our culture.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

One of our main focus areas as a company is attracting and retaining highly skilled carpenters and foremen who can grow into our future Superintendents.  We have placed a strong emphasis on identifying the outstanding carpenters and foremen, and then pairing them with some of our highly skilled Superintendents who have been in the business for many years.  We are hoping to transfer over the knowledge of our current Superintendents to our up-and-comers in order to set the company up for even more success in the future.

Another strong focus in our hiring is on our diversity recruiting, specifically aiming to hire minority candidates and women in construction.  We have an incredibly diverse company already, but we want to continue our efforts so we are able to attract and retain a diverse group of high-performing employees in all areas of the company.
