What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?
Big-D has key values that normally align with the characteristics of candidates that we normally hire. Integrity, Achievement, Collaboration, and Respect. Are they able to be accountable for their work and actions and able to hold other people accountable as well, in a respectful/collaborative way. We also look at how a person treats clients, vendors, subcontractors, and employees. Is a person safe at work and at home, even when nobody is watching. We want people to take pride in their work and the projects they build. We want those who are proud to say "I built that"- no matter what capacity they had on the project. If you’d rather feel like a partner than a servant, this is the place. If you’d like to associate with the construction industry’s “cream of the crop,” this is the place. Your place.
What can prospective employees do to get your attention?
Prospective employees who are driven, passionate, and have a "build it like it's your own" mentality will get our attention. People who don't want to stop learning fit here. Depending on the position, prospective employees should present a project list, or include the types of projects they have worked on in their past. We also like to see people who tend to stay at 1 company for long periods of time, hoping their loyalty and tenure will continue with Big-D, as we pride ourselves on our tenure and members of our President's club.
Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?
The overall construction industry is changing and evolving after the great recession. We are going to be looking for skilled trades people like jouneyman carpenters and finishers for our self-perform concrete team in the mountain states region.
We are always on the lookout for top talent. We are constantly shuffling people around as projects start and end, and as we grow. Other positions we're always looking for: Project Assistants, Project Enginners, Project Managers, Estimators, Project Directors, Superintendents, etc.
