Perks and Programs

We asked Big-D Corporation to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Kids Fair: Each June, Big-D holds a Kids Fair for its employees and their families. The event starts of with a 5k walk run, roll and raffle prizes are given out. The event focuses on different aspects of the "Big-D Way", and this year it was "BUILD" (our in-house quality program). We had a BIM modeling tent with computers available for the kids to "model" their buildings. We then had some Legos available to build some famous buildings, like the white house and Lincoln memorial. Other vendors participate, like Home Depot, Mountain Crane, Industrial Supply, various face painters, pony rides, cotton candy, carnival games, etc. Imagine a local carnival, but everything is FREE for our employees.
  • NAWIC Membership: Big-D is very involved in NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction). With only 10% of the construction workforce being women, Big-D recognizes that diversity makes the company better able to achieve our mission statement to be the most sought after construction company in the business. As we look for various ways to network and find talented people to join our team, we have leaned a lot of NAWIC for referrals, as well as providing learning opportunities with monthly meetings and opportunities for community service. Big-D sponsors various NAWIC meetings, Sponsors events like "Block Kids", and also pays for membership fees for its employees.
  • LEED Certification: Green Building is one of Big-D's key strategies, GUIDE. This is an acronym that is focused on sustainability and limiting the impacts on the environment. We incorporate green building into all of our projects, regardless of LEED status. Big-D has built more than 61 LEED projects, including its corporate headquarters in Salt Lake City. If a Big-D employee would like to become LEED Certified, Big-D will pay for the certification exam, and will also provide a $500 bonus if the person passes the exam.
  • Kids create a calendar: Each October, we invite kids under the age of 16 to submit drawings for our annual calendar. The kids have to be related to a Big-D employee. Big-D employees vote on the drawings, which are displayed anonymously. The 12 winners get a $50 Toys-R-Us gift card and get their artwork published in the calendar for all to see. This is another fun way to get family involved with the company.
  • Women Thinking Big: "Women Thinking Big” celebrates women’s achievements in construction and promotes their advancement in this field. “Women Thinking Big” highlights women as a visible component of the construction industry and emphasizes their growing role here at Big-D. Big-D is proud to honor the women who put in the hours and hard work at our company. We hope by highlighting and celebrating women in our own organization, we can motivate and encourage more women to seek out the many roles and positions available in this amazing industry. This event is normally in April, and a fun activity like BINGO or bowling is associated with it, along with a gift basket to all the women in the company, no matter what their role is.
  • Public Transportation: Along the lines of Big-D's green building initiative, Big-D encourages its employees to take public transportation, when feasible, and pays for half of the public transportation ticket, up to $100 per month.
  • Fee's, Donations, Volunteering: Many opportunities to give back. A fun way of giving back is to be late for a meeting. Or having your phone go off in a meeting, or other "infraction". Our executive "fines" you $5.00 for these types of infractions and matches them and donates them to the children's center. We also have shared stories that have impacted our vendors, subs, employees, or overall industry that people can donate or volunteer their time. Also, the holiday season opens up a lot of opportunities to give back to the communities where we have offices in. We provide an "Angel" tree for the Christmas Box House. We've also held events that help raise money for various non-profit organizations.
  • Welcome Basket: Each new employee gets a bag with some Big-D SWAG (shirt, hat, mouse-pad, mug, etc.) and a nice welcome note from the president, Rob Moore. This has become a fun tradition in welcoming people to the "Big-D Family" directly from leadership and not just HR.
  • President's Club: When a full-time employee completes five years of service, that employee becomes a member of the “President’s Club.” An annual dinner is held each January to welcome new members and to present awards. Awards vary on the tenure, but start with a necklace and pendant for women, and a ring for men with "BIG-D" inscribed on it. The jewelry starts with gemstones- emeralds, sapphires, and then diamonds as the years progress. Other awards include a nice leather jacket, Rolex, and cash. This is a way Big-D values their employees and recognizes the work and contribution they've given over the years. There are currently over 330 employees part of this "President's Club".
  • Ice Cream Truck: A newly added addition that has become a summer hit- a Big-D ice cream truck. We have had it at our annual Kids Fair, Subcontractor Appreciation BBQ, and have started bringing it to job sites for the crews to take a break and cool off with some ice cream and cold Powerades.

    How to Get Hired

We asked Big-D Corporation for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

Big-D has key values that normally align with the characteristics of candidates that we normally hire.  Integrity, Achievement, Collaboration, and Respect.  Are they able to be accountable for their work and actions and able to hold other people accountable as well, in a respectful/collaborative way.  We also look at how a person treats clients, vendors, subcontractors, and employees.  Is a person safe at work and at home, even when nobody is watching.  We want people to take pride in their work and the projects they build.  We want those who are proud to say "I built that"- no matter what capacity they had on the project.  If you’d rather feel like a partner than a servant, this is the place. If you’d like to associate with the construction industry’s “cream of the crop,” this is the place. Your place.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Prospective employees who are driven, passionate, and have a "build it like it's your own" mentality will get our attention.  People who don't want to stop learning fit here.  Depending on the position, prospective employees should present a project list, or include the types of projects they have worked on in their past.  We also like to see people who tend to stay at 1 company for long periods of time, hoping their loyalty and tenure will continue with Big-D, as we pride ourselves on our tenure and members of our President's club.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

The overall construction industry is changing and evolving after the great recession.  We are going to be looking for skilled trades people like jouneyman carpenters and finishers for our self-perform concrete team in the mountain states region. We are always on the lookout for top talent.  We are constantly shuffling people around as projects start and end, and as we grow.  Other positions we're always looking for: Project Assistants, Project Enginners, Project Managers, Estimators, Project Directors, Superintendents, etc.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?
