What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?
They show engagement. Engaged employees aren’t just involved with their jobs. They’re excited to know about the different parts and pieces of the company. Not only do the most engaged employees get involved with projects outside of their job descriptions, they feel like it is their duty to do so. They demonstrate exceptional performance. A great employee will work each day to move your company forward, and in the process, grow his or her own career. From the person packaging the bolts to the person opening international offices, the employees who strive for excellence are the ones we consider first for promotions. They have a positive attitude. Positivity is infectious, and employees who show authentic enthusiasm about their work make the workday fun and rewarding. We all want to work with people we like.
What can prospective employees do to get your attention?
We pride ourselves on being contrarian, so think about what other people have done — and don’t do that! As you can imagine, we receive a slew of “attention getters” all the time, but the most memorable and impressive way to get our attention is through your work. We want people who are passionate about the growth of the company and who can deliver results. Come in and ask (intelligent) questions. Tell us why you think you'll be a great fit. Be yourself.
Are there any unusual or especially rigorous steps of your hiring process that candidates should be aware of?
For us, It’s not enough to simply submit a resume and cross your fingers. For some positions, we are going to ask you to provide us with a portfolio or some other samples of your work. In other cases, we will give you a project to complete or invite you in to meet with the team and see how you function in our day-to-day. We also screen most candidates through a video interview before the in-person interview.
Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?
Our focus is always on talent. More than just seeking to fill a specific role, we place strong emphasis on finding people that fit our culture, are curious, innovative and contrarian by nature.
