What They Do

We asked BambooHR to explain what they do. Here is what they had to say.

Our purpose is to set HR free to do great work. We do that by creating delightful software that automates operational tasks—like time-off requests, employee-data tracking, and reporting—and enabling HR to focus on strategic initiatives like increasing engagement and productivity.

Perks and Programs

We asked BambooHR to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Paid Paid Vacation: Because we want employees to be able to have enriching experiences with family and friends, we give each full-time employee $2000 per year to spend on vacation expenses. Bambooligans have been everywhere from Disneyland to Thailand on Paid Paid Vacation, and we love seeing their pictures and hearing about their adventures when they get back.
  • 40-Hour Workweek: We believe that work should support personal life, not the other way around. So we don’t stick around the office for 50 hours a week. We don’t answer phone calls at all hours of the night. And we definitely don’t keep one eye on the inbox while we’re on vacation. Instead, we focus intensely while we’re working (with occasional breaks to have a little fun), and then we leave it at the door when we clock out. By doing that, we get done in 40 hours per week what employees at many companies do in 50 or more hours.
  • Flexibility: We provide quite a bit of flexibility for our team members. Many Bambooligans choose to work from home at times—sometimes as part of a set schedule and other times just as the need arises. We understand that school programs, sick pets, dentist appointments, and other life events happen, and we support employees when they need to work irregular hours to accommodate those things.
  • Financial Education: We care deeply about helping employees succeed—professionally, personally, and even financially. To help with that, we provide a couple of different benefits for increasing financial savvy. First, we have a financial consultant whom employees can meet with to discuss their 401k investments, investment strategy, and financial goals. Second, if employees attend Financial Peace University (or a similar financial class), we pay the class fee and give employees a $100 bonus. Following principles learned in the class, Bambooligans who have taken the class have paid off and saved more than one million dollars.
  • All-Hands Meetings: In May and November each year, all Bambooligans meet off location for a day full of inspiration, celebration, and team building. These meetings help us create alignment and transparency with company ongoings, connect with coworkers whom we don’t get to work with on a daily basis, and rejuvenate ourselves so we can continue doing great work.
  • Company Values: We know our culture is the secret sauce to our success, and the recipe for that secret sauce is our company values: 1) Enjoy Quality of Life, 2) Grow From Good to Great, 3) Be Open, 4) Assume the Best, 5) Do the Right Thing, 6) Lead From Where You Are, 7) Make it Count. We hire people who exhibit these values and expect every Bambooligan—from CEO to intern—to live the values every day. By following these values, we create a company culture that’s both enjoyable and innovative.
  • Monthly Company Updates: Transparency is an important part of our culture, and monthly updates help us stay in the loop. Each month, we gather for a couple of hours of updates. We hear from different departments, employees give shoutouts to coworkers, we talk about what’s going on internally (everything from our recent user conference to service projects), and we cap it off with lunch. It’s fun, and it helps us all stay connected.
  • Informal Camaraderie: Although it isn’t necessarily a company program, the natural camaraderie that exists among Bambooligans definitely starts with and adds to our culture. Departments get together outside the office to hike, have dinner, and see movies. Coworkers have met up to help an employee put a new roof on his house. Teams play ultimate frisbee and board games during lunch. Mountain bikers meet before work to hit a trail or two. We genuinely love being around each other—so much so that we choose to do it outside of work hours, too.
  • Parenting Classes: We care deeply about helping employees develop skills that help them inside and outside the office. One of the ways we do this is by partnering with Utah State University to host parenting classes for employees. Employees can attend these classes free of charge and learn how to “end power struggles with their children, teach responsibility, and prevent arguments.”
  • Community Service: One of our employees’ favorite things to do together is give back. Teams get together to serve food at homeless shelters, make blankets for children’s hospitals, read with elementary students at local schools, donate blood, and more. As a company, we’ve worked with organizations like Rise Against Hunger and Feed My Starving Children to purchase and pack more than 400,000 meals for impoverished children all over the world.

How to Get Hired

We asked BambooHR for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

Our company values help us create better products, have better relationships, and become better people—both inside and outside of work. It's important that Bamboo employees live the values because they have a very real influence on who we are as a company and impact every decision we make. We look for candidates who naturally embody them:  Assume the best, do the right thing, be open, enjoy quality of life, grow from good to great, lead from where you are, make it count. Read more about our company values at bamboohr.com/careers

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Candidates don't need to be flashy to get our attention. We carefully consider every application, so be sure all your application materials accurately reflect your skills and experience. Once the technical requirements are met, we dedicate time to getting to know qualified applicants beyond their resumes. We look for unique and diverse perspectives to add to our teams. We search for candidates who are humble enough to receive feedback, yet confident enough to take the lead, regardless of title or position. We love people who value high-quality results, are thoughtful in their actions, and who are genuine. So, just be yourself and show us how you can help us become better.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

This year, we’re looking for highly-talented UX designers, personable HR Project Managers, and thoughtful Account Executives. We’ll also be hiring for multiple roles that will help us grow and develop new business channels. That being said, we will hire multiple roles for every single department this year and are constantly looking for people who can help us become better. We’re growing incredibly fast but at a deliberate, strategic pace so that we can maintain our award-winning company culture. Even if you don’t see the specific role you’re looking for, apply through our general application posting on our careers site. Chances are, we’ll be hiring for your role soon, and we will reach out as soon as we're ready to start the interview process. Sometimes we even create roles specifically for people with incredible talent.
