Perks and Programs

We asked Balyasny Asset Management L.P. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Make BAM Better Series: BAM values direct feedback from all employees--regardless of position. As part of the "Make BAM Better" series, employees are invited to attend small group meetings with one of the firm’s partners to discuss feedback and ideas. After each meeting, we develop an action plan to address the ideas and challenges that employees bring to light. The purpose of these meetings is to reduce bureaucracy and other barriers to success and efficiency, while giving employees of all levels direct access to firm leaders.
  • Women’s Group: Our BAM Women’s Group is our largest employee resource group and provides opportunities for the firm’s women to come together for support and career development. The group organizes several events throughout the year including talks by inspiring women like former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Lois Frankel, author of Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office; social events like “Dress for Success” at Trunk Club; and partnerships with charities like Share Our Spare, which provides low-income and homeless families in Chicago with the the essentials they need to thrive.
  • Employee Training & Development: We believe in nurturing homegrown talent by helping our people grow and learn new skills. Last year, we held more than 200 employee-led training sessions aimed at sharing skills and best practices across the firm. Training ranges from effective communications and management skills to Python programming and investment strategies. We also invite external consultants to teach classes on presentation skills, trading psychology, leadership development, and team building. All training is recorded and distributed through Workday Learning, so employees around the world can access them. Lastly, one-on-one career coaching is available to all employees.
  • Developmental Portfolio Manager Program: Our Developmental Portfolio Manager Program is a formalized training program designed to give senior analysts the opportunity to become portfolio managers, and accelerate their learning curve within this new role. In this program, participants are provided with mentorship and training by senior members from across the firm. Participants generally manage a smaller, but material, amount of capital that has a direct impact on the firm’s performance.
  • Portfolio Manager & Analyst Development Program: For portfolio managers (PMs) and analysts, we provide one-on-one and group training throughout the year. We analyze and identify concrete ways our PMs can improve performance, then work with them individually to integrate feedback into their day to day process. In addition, we provide them with tools, data, and support in areas such as team management, quantitative research, and technology. Similarly, we have a dedicated program to help our analyst by sharing best practices, helping them manage their career paths, and fostering communication within individual teams and across the firm. Across both initiatives, training opportunities include a packed calendar of teach-ins and one-on-one coaching sessions that focus on building effective partnerships between PMs and Analysts, investment idea generation, research strategies, and more.
  • BAMfit: Most of our offices have an onsite gym so employees can workout on their own — or schedule a session with one of the firm’s personal trainers. Additionally, BAM employees can participate in onsite yoga and interval training classes, group meditation, massages, wellness exams, flu-shots, nutrition lunch-and-learn events, and firm-wide fitness competitions. BAM employees can also take their fitness routines outside with firm-sponsored activities such as the Nashville Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon, Tough Mudder races, and “Healthy Happy Hour” events.
  • Family Events & Programs: At BAM, we are all one family and employees often use the term “BAMily” to describe the way the firm values employees — and their families, too. For example, our benefits program provides medical, vision and dental coverage for the employee and all family members at no cost. The firm covers the premiums. We also organize several family-friendly events throughout the year like summer cookouts, Bring your Sons and Daughters to Work Day, and holiday parties. There are many opportunities to get to know your coworkers and their families.
  • Healthy Food Program: In each of our offices, BAM employees are provided with a free catered lunch or food delivery service. We provide a variety of food options to accommodate dietary needs while providing a variety of healthy food options. In addition to our lunch program, our kitchens are stocked with healthy snacks and beverages like fresh fruit, nuts, granola bars, sliced vegetables and hummus, yogurt and more.

How to Get Hired

We asked Balyasny Asset Management L.P. for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

A strong academic and professional track record, impressive credentials, and relevant experience are characteristics which spark our interest early in the recruiting process. But one of the key things we assess is whether an individual will positively influence the firm's culture. Our goal at Balyasny Asset Management is to source the best and brightest individuals in their respective fields, who can perform well in a collaborative, collegial, and supportive work environment. At BAM, individuals across all departments (investment and middle/back office) operate as a team. They collaborate about the markets and industry trends, share best practices, and help one another to achieve success. Employees at BAM genuinely enjoy coming to work every day, and we believe this is what sets BAM apart from its competitors.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

A strong resume showcasing transferable skills and an exceptional reputation in the industry will grab our attention. Our team receives many resumes per day, so having a unique experience or something that really stands out in your resume or LinkedIn profile can help increase our interest, i.e. measurable performance and successes, unique skill sets, notable achievements, creative interests, et al. We often seek candidates from outside of the finance industry that have relevant skills. We believe that candidates like these offer a unique perspective and often push us to find innovative solutions to the challenges in our business.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

Portfolio managers and investment analysts continue to be top priorities for hiring as they are the engines that drive our business. This year, we are focused on continuing to hire the highest caliber of individuals to join our portfolio teams across all market sectors and investment strategies. In addition, we are in search of strong individuals to join our middle/back office to help grow and sustain the infrastructure that supports our business.
