Perks and Programs

We asked Axcella Health to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Commuter Reimbursement and Assistance: We pay for on-site parking for all employees that drive to work. In addition, we provide reimbursement for monthly commuter passes for employees that use public transportation to commute to work, and inside bike racks for those that commute via bike.
  • Chair Massages: Once a month we bring in a company sponsored masseuse to provide private chair massages.
  • Mothers’ Room: We want to make the transition back to work as easy as possible for all our moms. A private lactation room has been designated, complete with a large comfy electronic massage chair. Our moms reserve and sign up for the time that is most convenient for them, via an Outlook calendar specifically for the mother’s room.
  • Towel Service: The company sponsors a weekly white towel laundry service so those running, biking or exercising before, during or after work, can easily shower. We have several showers in our building and this service makes it much easier for employees to exercise every day, and not have to bring towels back and forth from home.
  • Culture Committee: We have a culture committee that leads multiple culture-enhancing events throughout the year. The events include the Family Halloween Party, Thanksgiving Potluck, Holiday Party, Family Summer Outing, Bi-Monthly Birthday Breakfasts, and community service events. In addition to internal events, the Culture Committee organizes events with other biotech companies in our building to promote a strong culture, in and outside our office walls.
  • Post-Event Uber Rides: We provide reimbursement for Uber rides after evening gatherings. Our employee’s safety is of the utmost importance, and we want to make sure everyone gets home safe after an event.
  • Suggestion Box: We have a suggestion box on each floor to encourage employees to provide suggestions for any aspect of our operations. The suggestion box is also used for employees to submit questions. Members of the senior team answer the questions at our quarterly fire-side chats.
  • Shout Out Inbox: We have a “Shoutout” Inbox on our network, so it’s easy to recognize your colleagues for the little things they do every day that you appreciate. “Shoutout” e-mails are collected monthly, read and acknowledged by the CEO at a company wide meeting that always includes kudos and applause from everyone.
  • Free Form Food Fridays: We encourage any employee, with a little help from their friends, to take over our fully equipped kitchen late Friday afternoons to prepare any culinary creation of their choice. We have employees from many different countries and ethnic backgrounds, China, India, Germany, France, El Salvador, Italy, England, Armenia, Lebanon etc., it’s always a delicious surprise. The only requirements are that notice is provided to everyone via e-mail a few days in advance, and an expense form is submitted for reimbursement of all costs.
  • LeanBox Meal, Snacks, Beverages: We have a developed a relationship with Leanbox to provide employees with a continuous stock of fresh meals, beverages and snacks. The machine is restocked every 2-3 days with fresh meals, and the company subsidizes a portion of the cost to encourage employees to make healthier food choices. If an employee works late or comes in on a weekend, meals from the LeanBox are paid for in full by the company. LeanBox also provides fresh fruit delivery twice a week and a beverage dispenser with filtered still and sparkling water to promote healthy hydration.

    How to Get Hired

We asked Axcella Health for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

When assessing a candidate for their ability to thrive in our culture, we look for characteristics common among our existing team.  Flexibility and agility are required to be successful in a start-up environment, so we look for evidence of these abilities in candidates, both personally and professionally.  These traits often go hand and hand with the ability to innovate, a hallmark of both brilliant science and a creative team.  We also want people who are interesting, so we try to find out about personal interests, hobbies, past times, passions etc.  Another important trait for us is determining if the candidate is able to roll up their sleeves and do whatever it takes to get the job done.  Being a small company, we need individuals who love digging in, not just directing others.  And maybe the most important thing we look for is that the candidate be a genuinely nice person.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

When invited to interview, we expect a candidate to come prepared, having already read about our science and leadership team on our website.  It's impressive when someone goes beyond this and investigates who we are, and what we hope to accomplish, eagerly engaging us with questions and conversation about what they learned. Reaching out to employees or connections of employees via Linked In, shows initiative and resourcefulness, both common characteristics here.  During the interview process, a genuine friendly manner and open conversation, allows us to learn more about what's important to the candidate, and what they're looking for in a work environment.  We all really like being asked questions about what it's like to work here because we love to talk about it, and often it means culture is important to the candidate too!

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

The positions we are focused on hiring for in the coming year, will be subject matter experts who have experience leading the areas of regulatory affairs, pharmacology, formulation and analytical development.  Additional scientists with experience in several of these specific areas will also be added to our teams this year. Additionally, the types of candidates we are ALWAYS focused on adding to our company are innovative, eager, collaborative people who are passionate about what they do

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website, and our company Linked In page, to learn more about who we are, and what we do. The careers section of our website is always current, and provides instructions for anyone interested in open positions. Additionally, press articles that detail business activities and conferences we're involved with, are also helpful in learning more about us.
