Perks and Programs

We asked Auto-Owners Insurance Company to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Associate Opportunities: Auto-Owners main focus is to promote from within the company. This creates opportunities for associates to grow and work within many different areas throughout their careers. Even our management-level positions are held by associates who have been with the company for a number of years. Most of our upper-level management associates have over 20 years of service with the company. Associates and management actively discuss areas that would be of interest to associates and work to find associates opportunities that would best suit the associate and the company’s goals. Videos and descriptions of various positions around the Company are available for associates’ review on our company intranet. This allows them to learn more about potential opportunities.
  • Student Loan Assistance Program: Full-time associates who have a student loan for their education through a federal or private institution are eligible to participate in the Student Loan Assistance Program. If an associate enrolls in the program, they can apply any unused A-O Flex benefit dollars to their loan.
  • Less than 40-Hour Workweek and Flexible Work Hours: The standard workweek for all Auto-Owners associates is 37.5 hours. While 37.5 hours is our standard workweek, our associates will occasionally work more than the 37.5 in order to get the job done and provide the best service possible to our customers and agents. Many associates are able to work schedules outside of our typical 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. workday. All associates are required to be at work during certain core hours and what flexible hours an associate may be able to work will be dependent on the needs of their department.
  • Company Fun Events: On an annual basis, Auto-Owners sponsors family fun nights at local minor league baseball games. Associates and their families are invited to a meal before the game and are provided tickets to the game. Other company events include: company sponsored intramural sports leagues (golf, baseball, basketball, etc.), periodic prize giveaways for participating in charitable giving events, and an annual snow pile melt guessing contest.
  • Family Atmosphere: Auto-Owners is a large company with a small company feel. You will frequently hear associates talk about their "Auto-Owners Family" and how much we all care about each other. Associates often develop longstanding professional relationships with their co-workers and will stay in contact with each other as they move between departments and even between states. When asked about their favorite aspects of working at Auto-Owners, it is very common to hear associates reference their relationships with management, co-workers and in some cases, even agents.
  • Associate & Management Interaction: Management at all levels is encouraged to have an open-door policy. Everyone in the Company, including the CEO, president and all other senior officers, answer their own phones and email. Associates know they can call anyone in the Company directly and have a conversation with them. When associates are being recognized, such as an anniversary or retirement, it is not uncommon for management at all levels, including the CEO, president and/or division senior officer to come to the celebration. For associates working in Lansing, the CEO will take the time to meet with each new associate to answer any questions they may have. Management at all levels will visit or meet with branches and departments periodically to answer any questions and give an update.
  • Community Support and Involvement: Auto-Owners and its associates are actively involved in local communities. As a company, Auto-Owners makes charitable donations to many organizations. Many associates donate their time and money to different charitable organizations throughout the year and also participate in numerous charitable events such as walks, 5Ks, etc.
  • Associate Education Programs: The insurance industry is constantly changing and Auto-Owners encourages all of its associates to keep learning. Associates have access to many educational programs and can earn many different designations and certifications. Auto-Owners pays for the cost of the exams and study material. Associates are not required to use any vacation or personal time to take an exam. Associates who earn a designation are recognized for their efforts by management and in the company magazine. When an associate earns a designation, they are eligible for an educational bonus. For some designations, associates have the choice of either receiving an educational bonus or going on the designation’s conferment trip.
  • Social Communication Tool for Associates: Associates in the Lansing and Grand Rapids areas have access to a group on the company communication tool Slack on which they can plan after-hours events and gatherings or discuss various topics of interest. Topics include lunch hour plans, fitness tips, recipes, and even a joke channel. We plan to expand use of this platform to all associates companywide in the near future.
  • Discounted Personal Insurance: Auto-Owners associates have the option of purchasing their personal insurance from the Company at a discounted rate. Onsite, licensed agents who are also A-O associates are available to assist associates with their insurance questions and needs.
