  • Less than 40 Hour Workweek: The standard workweek for all Auto-Owners associates is 37.5 hours. While 37.5 hours is our standard workweek, associates at times will work more than the 37.5 in order to get the job done and provide the best service possible to our customers.
  • Flexible Work Hours: Many associates are able to work hours outside of our typical 8:00 - 4:30 workday. All associates are required to be at work during certain core hours and what flexible hours an associate may be able to work will be dependent on the needs of their department.
  • Company Fun Events: On an annual basis, Auto-Owners sponsors family fun nights at local minor league baseball games. Associates and their families are invited to a meal before the game and are provided tickets to the game. Other company events include: company sponsored intramural sports leagues (golf, baseball, basketball, etc.), periodic prize giveaways for participating in charitable giving events, and an annual snow pile melt guessing contest.
  • Community Support and Involvement: Auto-Owners and its associates are actively involved in local communities. As a company, Auto-Owners makes charitable donations to many organizations. In celebration of our 100th anniversary, Auto-Owners donated over 1 million dollars to local basic needs organizations. Many associates donate their time and money to different charitable organizations throughout the year and also participate in many charitable events such as walks, 5Ks, etc.
  • Associate Education Programs: The insurance industry is constantly changing and Auto-Owners encourages all of its associates to keep learning. Associates have access to many educational programs and can earn many different designations. Auto-Owners pays for the cost of the exams and study material and also does not require the associate to use any vacation or personal time to take an exam. Associates who earn a designation are also eligible for an educational bonus.
  • Associate Opportunities: Auto-Owners' main focus is to promote from within the company. This creates opportunities for associates to grow and work within many different areas throughout their careers. Even our management-level positions are held by associates who have been with the company for a number of years. Most of our upper-level management associates have over 20 years of service with the company.
  • Family Atmosphere: Auto-Owners is a large company with a small company feel. You will often hear associates talk about their "Auto-Owners Family" and how much we all care about each other. Associates often develop longstanding professional relationships with their co-workers and will stay in contact with each other even as they move between departments and even between states.
  • Associate & Management Interaction: Management at all levels is encouraged to have an open-door policy. Everyone in the Company, including the CEO, President and all other Senior Officers, answers their own phones and email. We asked Auto-Owners Insurance Company for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

A prospective Auto-Owners associate would be a great cultural fit if we believe they will make our Company better and their personal values align with our Company Core Values.  Candidates should have a passion for learning, a spirit that makes us believe they would be engaged in fulfilling our goals and a desire to provide outstanding customer service.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Prospective associates should submit enough information with their employment application that we can see the skills and talents they could bring to our organization to make us better.  We invite all applicants to submit a video interview if they choose.  We recommend doing this as it helps us see an applicant’s communication style and give us more information about them based on how they answer the video interview questions.  Communication skills and the ability to form relationships are essential to being an effective member of our team.  Prospective associates need to demonstrate they can learn and have an interest in continuing to learn.  We want them to enjoy challenge and be willing to challenge the Company. 

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We hired over 600 new associates last year and expect we will continue hiring about that same number this year.  We are a growing company with new positions being added as well as openings being created because current associates are earning new opportunities.  We are always hiring for entry-level positions such as an Associate Underwriter or an Associate Claim Representative in numerous geographic locations.  We also have several openings in technical areas such as IT, Actuarial and Accounting.  We hire both people right out of college and people with many years of experience.  We hire people with many different backgrounds and majors – the important thing is that the prospective associate has good communication skills, good logical reasoning skills and be an agile, lifelong learner.

To get started, we suggest a candidate go online to our Auto-Owners Insurance Career Center at www.auto-owners.com/career-center.  Candidates will have the ability to set up a profile and apply to one or more of our open positions.  Candidates can also apply to a general position which will be reviewed by a Recruiter to determine which open positions may be a good fit for the applicant based on their education, skills and experience.   We also welcome candidates to come into our offices for a screening interview.  In our Home Office in Lansing, MI, candidates can just walk in during normal business hours and a Recruiter will meet with them.  In other locations, an appointment can be scheduled for a similar screening interview.
