Perks and Programs

We asked American Transmission Company to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Powering Wellness: ATC values the health and well-being of our employees. ATC provides a comprehensive wellness program with tools, resources and incentives to help employees and their families lead healthy, productive and balanced lives. This includes company-sponsored fun runs, charity walks, bike rides, team sponsorships and on-site fitness facilities to help employees stay fit. We also provide wellness education opportunities online, at work and at home.
  • Powering Connection: ATC is committed to the communities where our employees live and work. In 2016, ATC sponsored more than 400 organizations that work to make our communities stronger with $807,475 in corporate donations including our dollar-for-dollar Matching Gifts program. We also provide paid opportunities for volunteer activities with United Way and other community organizations during the workday and offer paid time off for employees to do personal volunteering.
  • Powering Growth: Our philosophy is to hire talented people, and help them grow in their careers. When our employees are successful, the company will enjoy success. Through our culture of development, ATC employees receive regular coaching from their supervisors, and may advance their careers through a variety of learning and development opportunities including leadership development, project management, mentoring, tuition reimbursement, online training and instructor-led programs. We also have an internal job posting process that ensures qualified employees receive promotion or transfer opportunities, resulting in an average of 37 percent of positions being filled internally.
  • Powering Wealth: We provide a competitive total rewards package with a strong correlation between pay and performance. In addition to eligibility for annual merit increases and promotional opportunities, all ATC employees, not just leadership, have the ability to earn up to 10 percent of their pay each year via a short-term incentive plan. We offer transparency about compensation calculations, and ensure employees are paid fairly by performing annual market adjustments. To help employees grow wealth and protect their future, ATC provides company contributions to a Health Savings Account, and offers a generous retirement savings program including both a 401(k) and individual account pension plan. Employees also have the opportunity to consult with financial professionals to manage their investments.
  • Work-life Balance: We believe in creating, nurturing and maintaining a supportive, healthy work environment that enables our employees to balance work and personal responsibilities through multiple programs. ATC offers flexible work arrangements, concierge services and generous paid time off programs allowing employees the freedom to attend to personal matters. Leaders stress that vacation time is intended for relaxing. New employees can receive credit for up to 15 years of industry experience in their vacation allotment. For some experienced new hires, that can mean up to four weeks of annual vacation time from day one. Additionally, employees have the option to buy up to five additional vacation days each year. ATC also provides all benefit-eligible employees with paid sick/personal time off each year and 10 paid holidays.
  • Convenient, innovative health care benefits: We care about making health care accessible for our employees and their families. While offering different plan options to suit different household and financial needs, we offer streamlined health care options to help employees better manage their care. Innovative services are included that can help parents of children with special needs. Employees can also ask questions, get advice and even receive care in some cases without stepping into a doctor’s office including options for free consultation with NurseLine or by obtaining basic medical care over the phone or via video conference from a board-certified physician, 24/7. We also offer Plan Advisor to assist with questions and advice about how to get the most out of our health plan.
  • Recognition: ATC believes that all employees deserve timely and personalized recognition for their contributions to the company’s success. This is accomplished throughout the year with peer-presented awards that can be given for any achievement or recognition, leader-nominated project and teamwork awards, service awards, and individual awards that honor employees for demonstrating ATC’s values.
  • Environmental stewardship: In the field, our innovative construction practices on transmission-line projects, avian protection program and right-of-way pollinator program help protect the environment. In the workplace, our environmental commitment is evident in our facilities and employee engagement. Our employee-led “Green Teams,” plan fun, educational events related to environmental initiatives.
  • Celebrations and fun: Each month, we set time aside for companywide celebrations to show gratitude for our accomplishments and get employees together for food or fun. Team outings are also encouraged and we like to recognize personal accomplishments by celebrating weddings, new babies, birthdays and retirements.
  • Executive access: Our leaders ensure that they are regularly engaged in two-way dialogue with a wide variety of employees to share information and keep in touch with the pulse of the organization. This occurs both informally and formally through programs including quarterly Lunch with Executive sessions, breakfasts with the CEO and 15-year anniversary lunches with the CEO and members of the executive team.

How to Get Hired

We asked American Transmission Company for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

When we search for a new employee, how they do their job is just as important as what they’ve done. Teamwork - we look for employees who are able to work with a variety of people and put group accomplishments ahead of personal gain - we seek those in it for the larger good. Communicating - candidates must be able to listen and talk with others and be able to modify their message to suit their audience. Delivering Results - we look for individuals who are able to work under deadlines. Improvement & Innovation - candidates who believe in a culture of continuous improvement are attractive to us. Thinking commercially - we look for candidates who can see ATC’s business priorities. Self-Management - employees must be able to fully contribute on their own.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

A prospective candidate can get our attention by first being themselves. Networking with us at career fairs, community events and conferences are great next steps. Since 36 percent of our hires last year were from referrals, this is a great way to get noticed by HR and the hiring manager. In addition, candidates should follow ATC on LinkedIn and connect with our talent acquisition team to discuss new positions and future opportunities.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

In the coming year, we are focused on hiring electrical and civil engineers. Candidates with previous power experience are especially desired. Compliance is also a focus for us with changes and updates in our regulatory environment. Our information technology department is also growing and we are looking to add staff in many disciplines including systems engineering, systems support and cybersecurity.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

There are many ways an interested candidate can find out more about ATC to get started. First, our website is a comprehensive resource about our organization, our values and our projects. We have a careers section on our website that details benefits and our culture. Candidates are able apply directly on our website, where recruiters and hiring managers personally review their application. If a candidate is unfamiliar with the electric transmission industry, our YouTube channel features videos which highlight our projects and answers frequently asked questions. Finally, we encourage candidates to follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter, where they can get the latest information on ATC and can interact with our employees.
