Perks and Programs

We asked American Transmission Company to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Powering up Wellness: ATC is committed to the health and well-being of our employees. ATC provides a comprehensive wellness program with tools, resources and year-long incentives to help employees get excited leading a healthy, productive and balanced life. This also includes company-sponsored fun runs, charity walks, bike rides and on-site fitness facilities help employees stay fit.
  • Giving back: In 2015 ATC sponsored more than 400 organizations that work to make our communities stronger, with more than $536,000 in corporate donations. In addition, through our dollar-for-dollar Matching Gifts program, last year we gave a total of $63,000 in support of the programs that are important to our employees such as schools, sports events and local chambers of commerce.
  • Recognition: ATC believes that all employees deserve timely and personalized recognition for their contributions to the company’s success. This is accomplished throughout the year with peer-presented awards that can be given for any achievement or recognition, leader-nominated project and teamwork awards, service awards, and individual awards that honor employees for mentorship, community involvement, leadership and living our values.
  • Compensation and Incentives: All ATC employees, not just leadership, share in the company’s success each year via a short-term incentive plan. Based on corporate and individual goal achievement, employees are eligible to earn a significant percentage of their salary in a bonus. In 2015, ATC paid out $7.2 million in annual short-term incentives, in additional to other rewards and recognition.
  • Diversity: We foster a culture where every employee has an opportunity to be successful. ATC also participates in a number of college career fairs that focus on a diverse audience and provides scholarships for students who are underrepresented in the field of engineering. Within the workplace, we issue monthly communications and meeting topics focused on improving the work environment and increasing inclusion.
  • Work-life balance: Creating, nurturing, and maintaining a supportive and healthy work environment through multiple programs enables our employees to balance work and personal responsibilities. ATC offers a flexible work arrangement, allowing employees the freedom to attend to personal matters. Managers stress to employees that vacation time is intended for relaxing. New employees can receive credit for up to 15 years of industry experience as though that time had been accrued at ATC. For some experienced new hires, that can mean up to four weeks of annual vacation time from day one. Additionally, employees have the option to buy up to five additional vacation days each year.
  • Learning and development opportunities: ATC employees may advance their careers through a variety of learning and development opportunities, including leadership development, project management, online training and instructor-led programs. We also have an internal job posting process that ensures qualified employees are provided promotion or transfer opportunities.
  • Environmental stewardship: At ATC, our environmental commitment is woven through everything we do – all day, every day. Whether it’s our innovative construction practices on transmission-line projects, our involvement in the community, our avian protection program or our right-of-way maintenance activities, protecting the environment is a priority that is aligned closely with the way we do business. In the workplace, our environmental commitment is evident in our facilities and employee engagement. Our employee-led “Green Teams,” plan fun, educational events related to environmental initiatives.
  • Celebrations: We celebrate our success together. Each month, we set time aside for company-wide celebrations, big and small, to show gratitude for our accomplishments and get employees together for food or fun. Some celebrations are as simple as a “make your own trail mix” snack bar, and some benefit local organizations such as writing letters to troops on Veterans Day or donating to local food pantries for a chance to wear your favorite team jersey to work during March Madness.
  • Embracing One Team: At ATC, we recognize that everything we do is a result of team effort. That’s why we have started calling ourselves One Team. A long-standing practice among our transmission-line project teams made of cross-functional members, it has grown as a reflection of our culture that taps into the strengths we have across the entire organization. Everyone at ATC is a member of One Team.

    How to Get Hired

We asked American Transmission Company for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

When we search for a new employee, how they do their job is just as important as what they’ve done. Teamwork - we look for employees who are able to work with a variety of people and put group accomplishments ahead of personal gain - we seek those in it for the larger good. Communicating - candidates must be able to listen and talk with others and be able to modify their message to suit their audience. Delivering Results - we look for individuals who are able to work under deadlines. Improvement & Innovation - candidates who believe in a culture of continuous improvement are attractive to us. Thinking commercially - we look for candidates who can see ATC’s business priorities. Self-Management - employees must be able to fully contribute on their own.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

A prospective candidate can get our attention by first being themselves. Networking with us at career fairs, community events and conferences are great next steps. Since 29 percent of our hires last year were from referrals, this is a great way to get noticed by HR and the hiring manager. In addition, candidates should follow ATC on LinkedIn and connect with our talent acquisition team to discuss new positions and future opportunities.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

In the coming year, we are focused on hiring electrical and civil engineers. Candidates with previous power experience are especially desired. Compliance is also a focus for us with changes and updates in our regulatory environment. Our information technology department is also growing and we are looking to add staff in many disciplines including systems engineering, systems support and cybersecurity.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

There are many ways an interested candidate can find out more about ATC to get started. First, our website is a comprehensive resource about our organization, our values and our projects. We have a careers section on our website that details benefits and our culture. Candidates are able apply directly on our website, where recruiters and hiring managers personally review their application. If a candidate is unfamiliar with the electric transmission industry, our YouTube channel  features videos which highlight our projects and answers frequently asked questions. Finally, we encourage candidates to follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter, where they can get the latest information on ATC and can interact with our employees.
