Perks and Programs

We asked American Savings Bank to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Teammate Appreciation Month: Our teammates are the reason we’re successful, so we celebrate, recognize and reward them all year long! From fun Post-It Mural Contests and ASB Mannequin Challenges to Halloween costume and ugly Christmas sweater contests, we go all out to honor our amazing crew. During Teammate Appreciation Month, we make sure every team member has the opportunity to be recognized and to also recognize others. In 2017, our Executive Team, dressed in superhero capes and masks, greeted teammates at the door with Good News candy bars. We printed special cards for teammates to send to each other to recognize and thank their fellow superheroes. We held a bank-wide shield contest and asked teammates to create their own shield that reflected their superpowers. We created photo booths with props so that teammates could send in their Superhero Selfies. Every year, it’s a month-long love-fest for our teammates to show our appreciation.
  • Mahalo Party: Our annual, all-teammate Mahalo ("Thank You") Party is a huge, one-day event in Honolulu with food, drinks, music, dancing and fun activities. It’s the high point of Teammate Appreciation Month. Teammates from neighbor islands are flown to Honolulu for the event with transportation to/from the airport. In 2017, our Mahalo Party was held at the beautiful Iolani Palace and featured numerous food vendors with everything from brick-oven pizza to cotton candy. We also featured a silent disco where teammates could either participate by dancing to their own selected music through head phones or watch others dance to silent music (either way, it was hugely entertaining). Every teammate who comes received a special t-shirt, fan and other goodies along with the opportunity to play games and activities that encouraged mingling and getting to know teammates outside their own department. • Makana Rewards/Treats: Makana (meaning gift in Hawaiian) Rewards is our email-based rewards and recognition platform that teammates can use to exchange their Makana Rewards/points for a variety of gift cards and merchandise. Teammates can earn Makana Rewards through our LifeBalance wellness program, our Years of Service program, Makana Wild Cards (spot awards), various sales awards. On their anniversary or service date, team members receive a personalized email thanking them for their awesome years of service. Each email contains not only their Makana points but also a super fun Jib Jab video featuring our Executive Team members singing Celebrate Good Times! In 2017, we also offered periodic Treats to team members. Teammates received four Treats throughout the year, e.g. Teammate Appreciation Month, Thanksgiving, etc., and received a special Treat that ranged from a $5 gift card to a grand prize vacation valued at over $1000.
  • Birthday Holiday: Happy Birthday! ASB celebrates teammates’ birthdays by giving them an extra day off! Teammates receive an extra day of PTO on their special day (or the closest business day) to have fun, relax, and celebrate the most important day of all – the day they were born! Part-time teammates receive 4 hours of pay for their birthday. During orientation, we acknowledge teammates who have an upcoming birthday and tell them to go ahead and schedule their special day with their manager as soon as they get to their department/branch. All team members receive their birthday holiday, even those who just started a few days before their birthday!
  • Leadership Development: We are committed and invested in developing our rising stars. We offer monthly skills-building and leadership development training, as well as targeted programs designed to identify up and comers and foster a positive environment of collaboration and growth. Throughout the year, leaders can participate in Leadership Labs, a series of trainings that cover a wide variety of topics, such as Managing Millennials, Difficult Conversations and Goal Setting. We have a bank-wide conference for the leaders of our organization twice a year called Leadership Forum, during which our executive management team provides updates on our objectives and goals, alongside team building. Our Leadership Academy program is a 15-month program designed to help ASB leaders enhance their leadership skills and broaden their understanding of the industry. This select group meets once a month to participate in a variety of engaging coursework, collaborative problem-solving, interactive executive sessions, and group and individual assignments.
  • LifeBalance program: Our award winning LifeBalance program focuses on improving overall health and well-being. We offer fun activities and challenges to help teammates reach their goals. From our Biggest Loser weight loss challenge to plank and push up challenges to our 3 Million Miles in one year challenge, teammates can compete as an individual or in teams with the chance to win prizes and be a celebrity. The LifeBalance website features online challenges, contests, rewards, social networking and personal health tracking tools and is accessible 24/7 from home as well as work. We also offer on-site fitness classes including yoga twice a week, Pilates, HIIT and circuit classes; onsite chair massage once a month for $1/minute; onsite wellness workshops/presentations from external partners on such topics as Social Security, 401k Savings, Eldercare, 529 College Savings Plan, and Long Term Care.
  • Seeds of Service: Bringing real impact to the community is part of who we are – so much that it’s part of our vision as a bank. Throughout the year, teammates have lots of opportunities to grow new skills, meet new people and volunteer for our many Seeds of Service activities. Our projects include beautifying local domestic abuse and family shelters, participating in clean-ups and other activities for environmental stewardship, Habitat for Humanity home builds and more. Each year, we select one day during our Teammate Appreciation Month dedicated to community service. Teammates on each island rally together to complete service projects, all on the same day. Last year, more than 350 of our teammates participated in this Statewide Seeds of Service. And in 2017, we completed more than 7,800 volunteer hours as a bank! Click here to view a video of one of our Seeds of Service projects: https://vimeo.com/207871906.
  • Growth Opportunities: The possibilities are endless for motivated individuals who are eager to work hard, learn new things, and grow their career with us. We offer stretch projects for teammates who want to explore different career paths and offer resources to help them get there. At ASB, we even have a Dream Team Journey video series that showcases the journeys of teammates at the bank. We share these videos internally via our intranet as well as on our social media. Here’s a link to one of our Dream Team Journeys: https://vimeo.com/228416393.
  • Employee Excellence Council: Team members are encouraged to join the Employee Excellence Council (EEC), a group of representatives from every department, branch, island, that meet quarterly to weigh in on a variety of programs and upcoming events. Our Chief Administrative Officer leads the meeting, encouraging active participation with small breakout sessions and interactive games. Teammates have the opportunity to voice not only their opinion but the thoughts and feelings of their fellow teammates at the meeting on such issues as PTO, our new campus, our LifeBalance program, Community Advancement, and much more.
  • ASB’s Dive into DiSC: We believe that by understanding our customers’ needs, motivations and priorities, we are best able to make their dreams possible. Likewise, having team members who work effectively with each other allows us to better serve our customers AND create a great place to work where differences are not only respected, but also valued. DiSC has helped us do that. A well-known behavioral model used to improve work productivity, teamwork and communication, DiSC is part of our culture where people use the terminology in everyday language and DiSC styles are discussed at project team kick-offs. DiSC is first introduced during orientation and is energized via in-tact team training sessions, activities that are available on our intranet, and inclusion in training opportunities whenever applicable. We have reached a point where managers actively seek out DiSC training for their teams because they see the value that it brings to team effectiveness.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

We look for candidates who share our vision and values. Our ideal candidates are passionate about their careers, care about our community and have a sense of fun. We also look for problem solvers who are committed to satisfying the needs of our customers, doing their work the right way, speaking up and collaborating with others and taking ownership of their self-development. Candidates have a huge opportunity to share what they are looking for in their next role with our recruiters, who will then match them with the best opportunity. We pride ourselves on being the "unstuffy" bank, so the best way for a candidate to get our attention is to relax and be him- or herself!

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?
