We asked ALKU to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • ALKU's Annual Tropical Vacation: This trip is also known as "The Founder's Club". This program rewards the highest producers on ALKU's revenue side with a tropical vacation, and the individuals who exceed their sales and production goals within a given year are given the opportunity to attend. A company-wide goal is created as well, and if it is achieved then the entire company can go. This was achieved back in 2014, where the whole ALKrew was able to go to Puerto Rico. ALKU's other past destinations include Jamaica and St. Thomas.
  • Free Snacks & Bagel Day: At ALKU, it is very important to keep our employees happy and full of energy! ALKU provides everyone in the office with plenty of snacks. Some delicious treats include: Rice Krispy Treats, M&M's, Chex Mix, Fruit Snacks, Granola Bars, Easy Mac, Oatmeal, Popcorn etc. In addition, Thursdays are infamous for "Bagel Day". Every Thursday morning, ALKU's employees are treated with a variety of different bagels from Bagel World. This gets our employees excited and lets them know that we are here to honor and treat them for their hard work!
  • Always Rewarding: ALKU consistently has numerous programs in place that reward and recognize employees for all accomplishments, no matter how small or large they may be. This recognition is presented through various platforms. Some include humorous emails, social media campaigns, award ceremonies, employee honor days, and our T-Shirt Program. ALKU's T-Shirt Program gives employees the opportunity to recognize and highlight other employees for excelling at their jobs by nominating them for a t-shirt that represents ALKU's five business goals. In addition, ALKU always finds a reason to celebrate. Some of the celebrations include Cocktail Receptions, Award Ceremonies, Annual Holiday Parties, Office Open House's, Happy Hours, Sporting Events, Ski Trips, Tropical Vacations and Leadership Development Ceremonies.
  • Friday Fun Days: ALKU hosts "Friday Fun Days” a couple of times per year which con ALKU creates teams amongst their employees. The teams participate in 4/5 rounds of different games. Some games include but are not limited to: Relay races, hula hoop competitions, ALKU trivia, card games, jenga, putting etc. The games are played until one team is left standing. The winning team is then broken up, and each person competes individually. The finalized winner gets a personalized trophy that is placed on their desk and is displayed for "bragging rights". Friday Fun Days are a great way to get ALKU employees to participate and get involved. It creates a fun office environment and reiterates the importance of the "Have Fun Working Hard" motto that ALKU strongly stands by.
  • Casual Fridays Year Round: Casual Friday's occur every Friday in the office. Employees are able to come to work in comfortable attire. This provides ALKU employees with a day to feel a little extra relaxed while in the office and get them excited for the weekend!
  • Ongoing Contests: Contests are constantly taking place in the ALKU office. These contests work as sales production incentives as well as rewards for the overall company's growth and success. One contest that occurs annually is the casual contest, where employees strive to hit weekly production goals in order to have casual summer! Additional contest prizes have included weekend getaways to Miami and Vegas, ski resorts, VIP nights out in the town, VISA reward gift cards, extra paid time off, flexible hours, CEO for a day, cash prizes and more! Internal contests not only push for the growth and success of the company, but also allow for the ALKrew to participate in cross divisional group outings and offsite team building so that we can continue to grow and build upon the "Have Fun Working Hard" culture that is ALKU.
  • Company-wide Meetings: ALKU prides itself on participating in quarterly updates and yearly kickoff meetings. These meetings allow for the entire company to come together every quarter to be updated on important pieces of information so everyone is in the know., which sets everyone up to have a successful next quarter. During one these quarterly updates, ALKU has the annual "Mark Tank," a spin off from the famously known television show Shark Tank. Employees are given the opportunity to present an idea that they think should be implemented into the company to benefit everyone at ALKU. Ideas have ranged from paid volunteer time off, college tuition reimbursement, an office library for our avid readers, and an iced coffee machine! The "sharks" then share their thoughts and either agree or disagree - majority wins. This gives employees the opportunity to share their ideas with the entire company in a fun and interactive way!
  • Intern & Mentoring Program: ALKU has been able to implement an intern training and mentoring program, where students are able to dive into their full-time careers while still in college. Students are given the ability to make money, develop professionally, and work alongside motivated, likeminded peers. This training and mentoring program was implemented with the hope that interns will ultimately become full-time employees when they graduate. To take it a step further, ALKU participates in a Draft where the full-time employees who are intern mentors pick their teams in a fun and interactive way!
  • Charitable Efforts: ALKU has a strong partnership with Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP) and Virginia Mentoring Partnership (VMP), which are nonprofit organizations that fuel and empower youth-adult relationships across MA and VA. Founder/CEO Mark Eldridge is a board member with MMP, and the ALKrew participates in the Rodman Ride for Kids, which is a 25, 50, or 100-mile bike ride that raises money for at-risk youth. Throughout its partnership with MMP and VMP, ALKU has been able to raise over $350,000 for the mentoring cause. ALKU is thrilled to present its third annual ALKU Scholarship! The ALKU Scholarship grants a rising high school senior who has been positively impacted by mentoring $20,000 to any 4-year college or university. One of ALKU's "Mark Tank" ideas resulted in the implementation of Paid Volunteer Time Off. Providing not only a career, but the tools and resources for employees to give back to the community is extremely important.
  • Engagement: It is important that employees who are going above and beyond in their job get recognized for all of their hard work and accomplishments. The ALKrew not only celebrates internally, but we prop them up by giving them opportunities to attend high level industry conferences, present at speaking engagements, attend college events and career fairs, participate in award acceptances, be on the ALKU Scholarship review committee, and so much more.

We asked ALKU for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

ALKU employs a fun, motivated group that enjoys accomplishing great things.  Through careful hiring that utilizes a focus on character traits, ALKU has created a culture of success for our tenured employees and recent hires.  These character traits include a strong work ethic, sense of humor, desire for personal growth and development and those who are competitive by nature.  

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Potential candidates that want to be noticed and taken seriously for candidacy should always pick up the phone and call as opposed to emailing and waiting for a response.   Persistence and urgency will certainly be noticed by managers at ALKU, this is especially true for those interested in a recruiting or sales role.  Once a candidate gets the hiring managers attention they are encouraged to share their story.  This doesn't mean selling specific skills, experience and details listed on their resume, but sharing who they are as an individual.  A potential candidate should also research the company’s website and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and SnapChat.  These platforms represent the social environment and culture at ALKU.  A candidate who has knowledge of this walking in, will certainly impress the hiring managers.
