The Power to Make in Action

Perks and Programs

We asked Ajinomoto Althea Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Cultural Champions: Althea’s culture is the foundation of who we are and our employees consistently demonstrate our values of Expertise, Innovation, Accountability, Compliance, Communication and Teamwork. Each quarter we recognize three Cultural Champions, individuals who have been nominated for their unique contributions that exemplify our cultural values. Recipients are publicly recognized during quarterly all-company gatherings. Each Champion receives a $500 bonus as well as a chance to win a day off with pay.
  • Employee Recognition: Althea’s thriving workplace culture and business success would not exist without our hardworking and dedicated employees. Employees are able to recognize each other by writing “culture cards” which highlight how an individual’s actions demonstrate Althea’s cultural values. Every employee who writes or receives a culture card is eligible for a monthly drawing. Winners and the respective nominators receive a $50 gift certificate. All culture cards are displayed as digital signage in all break rooms to further recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of our employees.
  • Althea U: Althea U was created as a platform to share firsthand with Altheans the specific impact their work has on the lives of patients. Clients regularly travel to Althea’s campus in San Diego to present on-site about the products they partner with Althea on and to share patients’ success stories. When clients are not presenting, we offer an internal Althea U series, giving employees the opportunity to learn about different departments and initiatives across the business.
  • Educational Opportunities: We promote continual learning and development in a variety of ways so as to best serve the diverse needs of our employees. Many Altheans utilize our tuition reimbursement program and benefit from up to $5,250 towards college classes. These classes often go towards a Master’s degree, professional certifications, or continued education. Leadership training is another tool Althea believes and is strongly invested in. New leaders and leaders new to Althea are offered multi-day, in-depth training to develop their skillset as mentors and leaders in the Biotech arena. Training opportunities are not exclusive to leaders at Althea; DISC interpersonal assessments and workshops are offered to all teams, furthering Althea’s commitment to communication and teamwork, and empowering employees to better understand their own communication styles and those of their colleagues.
  • Community Outreach: Giving back to the local community is a commitment of Althea’s. With the help of the Community Outreach Committee (made up of Altheans from across the company) company-sponsored activities for the year are chosen based on employee interest. The 2017 schedule includes a Habitat for Humanity Build Day, Pedal the Cause cycling fundraiser, Salvation Army Angel Tree, American Red Cross blood drives, and Humane Society drives. We also host an annual Charity Connection, a celebrated event that brings many local charities to campus, and encourages employees to connect with local organizations that are meaningful to them.
  • Wellness: Althea feels that wellness at work goes beyond offering insurance and paid time off to employees. We take an active approach to promoting activity and strive to foster an environment in which employees invest in their physical wellbeing. Althea provides an annual onsite health fair and free onsite flu shots to all employees. This year, we deployed our inaugural “10k step challenge” where individuals and teams compete over the course of 8 weeks with the goal of walking at least 10,000 steps a day. Free access is provided to a pool, tennis courts and basketball court for all employees– not only during the challenge but year round! Althea also sponsors co-ed sports teams including soccer, softball, and kickball. These teams give employees a chance to get to know others outside of their respective departments, build camaraderie, and get moving together. In 2016 Althea’s team won the Softball championship!
  • Holiday Shutdown and Time Off: Althea understands the importance of a work life balance and the benefit of spending dedicated, uninterrupted time with family and friends, as well as time to personally reenergize. That’s why all employees receive 13 paid holidays per year including a week of paid time off between Christmas and New Year’s. In addition, employees accrue 15 days of Paid Time Off per year, increasing with each year of employment.
  • Meet the CEO: Althea strives to create a transparent environment with open and honest communication between employees at all levels. Every month, new employees meet with directly with David Enloe, Althea’s CEO, in a small group. These sessions are interactive and give our new hires the opportunity to provide feedback on their first couple months at Althea, ask questions, and learn more about Althea’s business trajectory and cultural values.
  • Employee Benefits: At Althea, we appreciate the hard work and dedication our employees bring. For this and many other reasons, we offer competitive and cost effective medical benefits. The benefits package contains multiple plans to choose from, encompassing the diverse needs of our employees. Also offered are dental, vision, long term care, life, and disability insurance as well as flexible spending accounts.
  • Referral Program: We know the best place to find new talent is through our current talent! We recognize our employees for the great impact their referred hires make on our already strong culture by offering a referral bonus of $1,000 for a full time positions and a $500 for part time positions. Employees know the culture, environment, and mission of Althea firsthand. This unique insight is powerful and we appreciate and benefit from employees recommending roles at Althea to their friends, family members, and contacts.
