Perks and Programs

We asked 3M to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • 3M Tech Forum: 3M Tech Forum is a grass-roots, professional society for 3M’s technical employees. Tech Forum gives our R&D employees a way to interact, ask questions and collaborate on new projects. The 35 chapters range in topic from Acoustics to Vapor Processing. In past years, Tech Forum’s collaborations have resulted in innovations such as 3M™ Cubitron™, light management films, 3M™ Scotchcast™, and 3M™ ESPE™ Protemp™ Crown. Each year Tech Forum hosts an internal, high-energy “trade show” that all 3M employees can attend, highlighting the newest product launches and technology advances from all of 3M's business groups and corporate labs.
  • Young Scientist Challenge: The Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge is the "ultimate middle school science competition." It gives the next generation of American scientists and innovators in grades 5-8 the opportunity to work directly with – and be mentored by – 3M scientists. The competition encourages critical thinking, experiential learning and communication in order to solve real-world problems. Ten finalists receive a trip to 3M headquarters to present their innovation. Hundreds of 3M employees are involved each year in making this competition truly world-class. (
  • Military Veteran Support: 3M provides active assistance and outreach to military veterans and their families. Internally, our robust Military Support Network provides scholarships, professional development, a military speaker series and networking opportunities. Through the Hire Our Heroes program, 3M partners with organizations to train returning military veterans and their families in the field of automotive collision repair. We conduct mock interviews and resume reviews in TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) sessions and support many community outreach efforts. We have a new 3M Veteran Careers website and are in the midst of a campaign to hire military veterans.
  • 3M Women's Leadership Forum: The Women's Leadership Forum (WLF) is a global, open community of more than 10,000 3M women and men dedicated to supporting the inclusion, development, and advancement of women into leadership positions worldwide. Local programs are driven from a common framework focused on individual, culture, and visibility opportunities. Twelve active chapters across the U.S. are led by local volunteer chairs and sponsored by executive leaders. A May 2016 employee survey indicated 52% of U.S. women and 16% of U.S. men agree that the WLF has "provided opportunities that have benefited me."  Career planning tools and workshops, one-year "Lean In" discussion/peer mentoring groups, FlexAbility arrangement guides and STEM role models in schools are examples of programs making an impact.
  • FlexAbility program: 3M's FlexAbility program is an initiative around flexible workplace scheduling and remote working opportunities for 3M employees worldwide to help them better balance their professional and personal lives. We ask, "When and where do you do your best work? What could you do differently to achieve your goals at work and at home?" At 3M, you can rework your schedule by using FlexAbility. It's a fluid, simple process - all it requires is a conversation between an employee and his or her manager.
  • 3M Gives Volunteers: 3M helps build sustainable communities through strategic social investments and thoughtful engagement of 3Mers worldwide. We emphasize both homegrown programs, like 3M Visiting Wizards and 3M Stuff for Schools, plus national partnerships, including MathCounts, Boys and Girls Clubs and United Way. Employees participate in frequent onsite volunteer events and love the 3M product sales, where all proceeds go to charity. In 2015, more than 10,000 volunteers devoted over 30,000 hours during 3M’s second annual Global Volunteer Day. For example, 3Mers in South Africa painted a play area at Sithabile Youth and Child Center, and 3M Taiwan volunteers hosted a science carnival for 5,000 and a science camp for 100 high school students.
  • 3M Bees: At 3M’s Minnesota headquarters, the grounds are planted with bee-friendly flowers, and we have seven bee hives on our campus to help pollinate nearby trees and flowers. Passionate volunteers tend the hives. Every other week during the summer, the University of Minnesota BeeSquad visits 3M’s campus to check in on the bees and offer educational sessions. 3M employees can visit the hives, learn about bees, taste honey straight from the hive, and even hold a drone. Hundreds of 3M employees belong to an online group dedicated to the goings-on of 3M’s bees. Other 3M locations are installing hives as well. Now we are working on a bottling plan in order to sell the honey to 3Mers to raise money for the United Way.
  • 15% Culture: Unique to 3M is our 15% culture, instituted six decades ago. Employees can spend 15% of their time working on ideas and projects of their own choosing. This inspires creativity, risk-taking and collaboration, as well as new products. If it weren't for our 15% culture, we wouldn't have Post-it Notes.
